Yamaha will launch a new electric bike in Europe next year, and follow it with 2-3 more by 2015. The news comes in a statement on the company’s medium term growth strategy and follows the launch in Japan of its EC-03 electric scooter.

Yamaha’s game will have to be stepped up dramatically from the 27-mile range / 6-hour charge specs of the EC-03 (pictured) before it starts capturing the imagination of actual motorcyclists.

Sanyo’s ‘eneloop bike’ runs on batteries and foot power

Though it is pricey at $2,299.99, Sanyo North America Corp.’s eneloop bike demonstrates how electric-hybrid transportation can be used to help the environment. The company, a subsidiary of Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd., has donated the bike to the California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE) for its educational programs. The nonprofit organization helps residents, businesses and public agencies save energy, reduce grid demand and generate their own power through a variety of rebate, technical assistance and education programs.

Radical electric bike concept saves on space

Yuji Fujimura has taken the bicycle design manual and thrown it to the wind with his concept Electric Bike Version 2. Ditching the popular and familiar diamond frame design, Fujimura has opted for a flat solid box on wheels where the handlebars, seat and pedals fold away flat to help squeeze the bike into tiny parking spaces.

Parking bicycles can be a troublesome affair if you're in an area where an awful lot of people use two wheels to get around. As electric bikes grow in popularity the issue is unlikely to improve. Bikes have been hailed as an ecologically sound alternative because their rechargeable batteries leave a smaller carbon footprint than a car.

Ducati has built its reputation on producing thoroughbred twin-cylinder sports motorcycles, but the latest two-wheeler in the Italian company’s range is an electric bicycle with a top speed of 15mph.
